Universities as a community of autonomous scholars delving into knowledge and seeking to expand it is a model long out of date. With the explosive growth of university, scientific, and granting agency bureaucracies, coercive oversight and imposition has grown by magnitudes.
One example is mandatory research ethics tests for professors and students. These became popular in the 1970s and 1980s, as universities became more ideological. When research ethics reviews were first proposed at McGill University, my senior colleagues argued that this was not meant to be an imposition on faculty and students; it was a helpful opportunity for researchers to reflect on ethical responsibilities. But, of course, this non-imposition became an imposition once bureaucrats were appointed to administer and impose the requirement. ....

Rawalpindi: The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings has placed Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) the first in mono discipline universities of the country while eighth in poly discipline universities of Pakistan in 2021 Impact Rankings in its third edition.
The Impact Rankings, according to the website, are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). RMU was established in 2017 and in a short span of three-and-a-half-year of its inception, it has been ranked the first among mono discipline medical universities of Pakistan which is certainly a great achievement, said Vice Chancellor at RMU Professor Mohammad Umar. ....

US to let Chinese students return for fall term

The United States government has announced that students from China will be exempt from the remaining travel bans related to COVID-19, but experts said the students still face hurdles such as visa-processing backlogs.
The US State Department said in a statement dated Monday that it made a national interest determination to exempt certain categories of travelers from the travel restrictions imposed by former US president Donald Trump s administration last year.
Those eligible for exemptions include students, academics, journalists and individuals seeking to provide vital support for critical infrastructure , from China, Brazil, Iran, South Africa, the 26-nation Schengen Area in Europe, the United Kingdom and Ireland. ....

All university students except those in Sarawak allowed to go home for Raya


PETALING JAYA: Students at higher learning institutions will be allowed to cross state borders to return home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The Higher Education Ministry announced that all students – except those in Sarawak – would be allowed to travel interstate from campus to their homes and return on designated dates in May.
Students have the choice to go home or remain on their campus during the holidays.
This is in line with the previous relaxation given by the National Security Council (NSC) for the education sector previously, it said in a statement on Thursday (April 29).
The ministry said the NSC made the decision during a special meeting on Wednesday (April 28). ....
