A computational approach to understanding how infants perceive language

Languages differ in the sounds they use. The Japanese language, for example, does not distinguish between r and l sounds as in rock versus lock. Remarkably, infants become attuned to the sounds of their native language before they learn to speak. One-year-old babies, for example, less readily distinguish between rock and lock when living in an environment where Japanese, rather than English, is spoken.
Influential scientific accounts of this early phonetic learning phenomenon initially proposed that infants group sounds into native vowel- and consonant-like phonetic categories through a statistical clustering mechanism known as distributional learning.

Prewired Receives Funding to Bring Coding Club Online

The new funding will help fill gaps in Scotland’s digital skills knowledge as the pandemic makes in-class learning impossible.
Youth programming club Prewired has secured funding from Creative Informatics to help the long-running Edinburgh group move online.
Before the pandemic, Prewired sessions took place at CodeBase in Edinburgh. The funding will help the social enterprise embark on online learning for young people across Edinburgh, with plans to expand nationwide in Scotland in due course.
The Creative Informatics funding is also being used to adapt the Prewired Summer Hack, previously offered as a week-lo ....

Prewired has taught coding and digital skills to over 350 under-19s since being founded in 2013 in partnership with University of Edinburghâs School of InformaticsÂ
Scottish charity Prewired was set up in response to âeducational gapâ in provision of digital skills in ScotlandÂ
