Women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints in the greater Chattanooga area are celebrating International Women’s Day with a day of service scheduled for Saturday.
IWD – held since the 1900s – was formalized in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1911.  In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution inviting member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.  Then, as now, the intent has been to pursue equal opportunity for women in all aspects of life.  In some cultures, IWD is like Mother’s Day.   ....

Towards the end of 1974, a stranger arrived in the small town of Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey.
He could often be found sitting on a favourite stool at the bar of the Napier pub, drinking Hurlimann lager and smoking French Gauloises cigarettes while flicking through the pages of the local paper.
