University Of Hawaii Officials Push Back Against Proposed Budget Cuts
The system could still see about $90 million in federal relief funds, half of which must be distributed as grants to students.
Reading time: 5 minutes.
Though the University of Hawaii is expected to get an influx of federal relief funds this year, officials still have concerns that cuts proposed by the Legislature could hurt higher education programs.
Lawmakers have proposed 10% cuts for UH in a state budget that also sees Hawaii government as a whole taking general fund reductions of about 7%. Many program cuts have been supplanted by federal relief funds thanks to the American Rescue Plan Act. UH is expected to get relief funds sent directly to each of the 10 campuses that comprise the state higher education system. ....

Here's Why It's So Hard To Reshape Hawaii's Tourism Industry

Here s Why It s So Hard To Reshape Hawaii s Tourism Industry - Honolulu Civil Beat
Policymakers fear jeopardizing the industry’s recovery from the pandemic because Hawaii needs the jobs back.
Reading time: 8 minutes.
As recently as early 2020, before COVID-19 wrecked the state’s economy, Hawaii was grappling with a problem much different from today’s economic challenges. The question then was what to do about ever-growing hordes of tourists.
The 250,000 visitors in Hawaii each day equaled nearly a fifth of the state’s population. And residents’ attitudes toward them were plummeting, as visitors took over beaches, hiking trails and homes in neighborhoods that had become meccas for vacation rentals. ....

Traffic congestion costs $690M, UHERO suggests ways to fix it | University of Hawaiʻi System News

One of most noticeable effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the dramatic reduction in traffic on Hawaiʻi’s roadways. But can this trend continue after the pandemic? Researchers from the University of Hawaiʻi Economic Research Organization (
UHERO) say it can be accomplished through a variety of ways, including implementing a strategic toll fee and staggering work hours.
A recent report estimated the annual cost of traffic congestion in Hawaiʻi to be $690 million, mainly paid through lost time and productivity from workers sitting in gridlock.
UHERO says smarter policy could eliminate this cost and direct the savings to local workers. ....

As of April, the state reported an average of 13,800 doses were administered daily. The researchers believe if the state is able to maintain this average, Hawaii will vaccinate 75% of its population by the first week of July.
If the state reaches this milestone, the state would reach herd immunity. Scientists expect that taming COVID-19 will require between 70% and 85% of the population having immunity.
Currently the state has administered over 1 million shots, and 505,898 residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
