The rich biodiversity of Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad is in danger — Quartz India

March 17, 2021
Amid the densely packed bustling urban settlements of Delhi and Gurugram, one would expect a jaunt far from the city to catch a glimpse of wildlife. But a new survey of the remnant Aravalli forests of Gurugram, Faridabad, and Delhi conducted in 2019 revealed that they harbour an astonishingly rich diversity of wildlife with relatively high densities of mammals in non-protected areas.
Forming a critical wildlife corridor, these contiguous forests, including Mangar Bani, a sacred grove near the Gurugram-Faridabad highway, need immediate protection to ensure wildlife can thrive in this region. One of the most degraded forests of India, Haryana’s Aravallis has suffered rapid deforestation. Frequent instances of human-leopard conflict have occurred in the region and need proper management, notes the WWF-funded report. ....

Boosting bee diversity can help stabilise crop production – new research

There are over 20,000 bee species and together they help pollinate more than 75% of the world’s leading food crops. Honeybees tend to hog the limelight, but few realise how important diversity is to this process. Having lots of different species of pollinating insects on farmland can lead to better crop yields, while crops attended by fewer species tend to set less fruit and produce fewer seeds.
For food systems to maintain a stable output each year, farms need pollinator numbers to remain stable too. But the abundance of these insects can fluctuate from one year to the next, so what’s needed to keep them relatively constant? With so much of the world’s food production dependent on the pollinating work of insects, this question is very important. ....

The Colombian frog farm trying to put animal traffickers out of business
In one of the world’s most biodiverse countries, thousands of animals fall victim to poaching each year. Could captive breeding projects help save some from extinction?
Ivan Lozano believes customers need alternatives to the illegal wildlife trade
Inside Ivan Lozano s secluded facility there are dozens of neatly stacked glass cases, glowing with ultraviolet light and filled with vegetation. These terrariums provide homes for some of Colombia s most endangered frogs.
It s from this small farm near Bogota that Lozano is trying to undermine the wildlife traffickers plundering the country s forests. ....

New method for genome assembly in barley provides excellent results

New publication by iDiv member at IPK Leibniz Institute
Based on a press release by IPK Leibniz Institute
Gatersleben. Genomes differ between the individuals of one species and we can learn a lot about diversity in our crops by comparing genomes of different varieties. However, researchers that want to study many genomes need a fast and reliable method for sequence assembly. An international research team led by the IPK Leibniz Institute has now investigated a new DNA sequencing method. The results, which have now been published in the journal The Plant Cell, are very promising. The scientists now hope to be able to use the method for assembling other barley genomes in the future. ....

Global warming helps invasive species flourish - study models likely combined effects on ecosystems

 E-Mail
Increased global temperatures help invasive species establish themselves in ecosystems, new research led by a Swansea University bioscientist has shown.
The study, published by the Royal Society, gives an insight into the probable combined effects of species invasions, which are becoming more common, and global warming.
Climate warming and biological invasions result in the loss of species. They also alter the structure of ecosystems and the ways in which species interact.
While there is already extensive research on how climate change and invasions affect species and ecosystems, we know surprisingly little about their combined effect, acting together in synergy. ....
