Voters across West Michigan hit the polls Tuesday deciding the fate of multiple school and local government tax proposals on the May 4 election ballot.
Some notable measures on the election ballot were a $192 million bond proposal from Kentwood Public Schools for infrastructure and tech upgrades, a Grand Haven Township $6.1 million bond proposal for park improvements, largely, to develop Schmidt Heritage Park, and a Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency request to renew the county’s 1.5-mill special education tax. ....

MUSKEGON, MI Voters in Muskegon County Tuesday approved some school improvement bonds in the Fruitport and Ravenna districts.
The Ravenna School District received support for one of two bond proposals totaling $16.1 million on Tuesday, May 4.
The first bond proposal for $10.89 million passed with 647 in favor to 549 opposed, or 54% to 46%, according to unofficial results from the Muskegon and Ottawa county clerk’s offices. ....

FRUITPORT, Mich. — Fruitport Community Schools has announced that all K-12 students will switch to virtual learning for the upcoming school week (April 12 through April 16).
In a Facebook post, Fruitport Community Schools writes that staff members are expected to show up to work on Monday, April 12 and prepare virtual lessons for the week ahead, adding that there will be no lessons for students on Monday.
They also say all standardized tests will be postponed and that chrome books will be available for pickup or delivery after 1 p.m. on Monday. ....

MUSKEGON, MI – Nicole Hudson’s kitchen table is covered in worn-out violins, clamps, glue and pieces of wood.
The Muskegon-area woman brings new life to broken violins by refurbishing and donating them to those in need.
The project started about a decade ago when Hudson was a bus driver for Fruitport Community Schools. A student who’s family was homeless confided in Hudson that she would like to play the violin.
Hudson bought a $10 violin from eBay, fixed it up and worked with the district to gift it to the girl. ....

The Muskegon-area woman collects broken down violins, repairs them and donates the instruments to the community, including to a 17-year-old boy, a mother of three children and a girl from Ravenna.
