Fitch Ratings has struck a partnership with a French artificial intelligence start-up as it seeks to improve its early detection of misconduct after a spate of high-profile banking scandals around the world.
Fitch, one of the big three credit rating agencies globally, last year helped lead a $6 million (€4.9 million) funding round for Paris-based Sigma Partners, which runs software that scours publicly available information for corporate governance risks. It is now a minority owner of the business. ....

The industry talk has been incessant that remote work is here to stay. According to PwC’s latest U.S. Remote Work Survey, more than half of U.S. executives (52%) believe employee productivity has gone up since before the pandemic. More than a third of their workers agree.
At the same time, many aspects of what post-pandemic work will look like are in flux. For example, fewer than 20% of company leaders want to return to the office as it was before COVID-19. However, only 13% are ready to give up their offices completely. But if employers and employees lack a clear view of how work will get done going forward, most agree some type of hybrid approach will take root, with workers spending some time in the office and some time outside of it. ....

Will London's Population Shrink For The First Time This Century In 2021?

For the first time in the 21st century, the population of London is set to decline.
That s according to Big Four accountancy firm PwC, who made the prediction in its January 2021 Economic Outlook paper. The firm anticipates a shift away from city living this year, with more Londoners leaving the capital and fewer newcomers making it their home.
The cause of this supposed impending urban flight? Unsurprisingly, the coronavirus pandemic shoulders a lot of the blame. Having been stuck at home for the best part of a year, PwC posits that people are placing newfound importance on spacious homes, access to green spaces, and a local community you can rely on and at least two out of those three are notoriously hard to come by in London. ....

New EU trading relationship 'greatest risk' for UK exporters

British manufacturers say that adapting to a new trading relationship with the EU poses the greatest risk to their 2021 business plans, despite the two parties agreeing a last-gasp trade deal in late December.
According to a major industry survey carried out by PwC and Make UK, a trade body representing the manufacturing sector, businesses “will again be faced with a myriad of challenges” this year after months of adapting to Covid-19 containment measures.
However, with a vaccine on the horizon and adjustments to working practices and supply chains already largely in place, manufacturers’ greatest concerns are around potential customs delays, increased regulatory costs and pressure on input costs due to Brexit. ....
