Vodka bottle in the face causes 'avulsion' wound for Decatur man, police report

DECATUR â Police said a Decatur man needed sutures to close a 3-inch-long, quarter-inch-wide facial wound after an assailant smashed a 12 ounce bottle of vodka against the right side of his head.
The resulting wound was described in a Decatur police sworn affidavit as an âavulsion of his skin on the side of his face.â An avulsion means a deep slicing away of the bodyâs tissue.
Police Officer Alex Amaya said the 47-year-old victim was attacked in the front yard of his home on the afternoon of March 4. Amaya, writing in the affidavit, said the victim had been with the assailant, aged 45, and an argument had broken out when the victim refused to buy the other man more alcohol and told the man to leave his property. ....

We have almost finished moving our things from Oaklawn and it is only a matter of a few more days until it will no longer be in my family.
My son, Johnny, and I have discovered many things in the house that have not been seen in years, but are treasures to keep. I am sure that in years to come members of our family will wonder why in the world did they keep these things?
In the old smoke house high up on the rafters were sacks of bottle caps. When I was asked why these were kept, I explained that my Daddy had grown up in the depression and there was a shortage of metal. He would save the bottle caps from drinks that was sold in the store. The store yard was dirt back then and Daddy would put those bottle caps around the gas pumps so our customers would not have to stand in the mud. ....

Last week, I attempted to poke a little fun at those outraged by toymaker Hasbroâs announcement that it would rebrand Mr. Potato Head as simply Potato Head in an effort to be more gender neutral. I suggested that getting oneâs knickers in a knot over something as inconsequential as a company rebrand of one of the most boring toys of my generation was distracting us from actual problems like deadly viruses, attempted insurrections and the seasonal increase in beer prices.
Judging from the reaction to the column, I underestimated either the publicâs reverence for this particular classic toy or the importance of potato gender and courtesy titles. ....

Soda-pop? Soft drink? Soda water?Â
My family just says âsoda.â Whatever you call it, the soft drink industry is huge. When did New Braunfelsers first get a taste for the sugary yet satisfying beverage?
As early as 1872, Otto and Theo Simon were bottling ice-cold soda at their home. They bought a new ice machine in 1875 and, with partner L. Paggi, they opened and ran an ice cream/soda water parlor until 1881. Imagine how amazing an ice cold soda was back in the days of no air conditioning and dusty streets.
Others soon jumped into the increasingly popular drink business. Dr. Grube teamed up with Bruno Voelcker to start their own soda water factory in 1881 but it was short-lived. ....
