BLOOMFIELD, Conn. — A group of religious leaders, advocates and state legislators gathered behind Governor Ned Lamont as he announced the release of the first round of grants under Connecticut's new Nonprofit Security Grant Program on Wednesday.
The program will help fund security improvements and address safety concerns for nonprofit facilities and houses of worship.
This includes purchasing bulletproof glass for windows, steel doors, security cameras and other crime prevention methods.

Hollifield: The springtime episode of Nature Run Amuck

Spring has sprung, according to the old cliché used by every unimaginative writer who ever penned a story that referenced spring.
We emerge from a long, hard winter, trees begin to show their early shades of green and animals shake off their cold-weather slumber, especially angry octopuses, drug-dealing cats and video-conferencing chimps.
It’s time once again for the infrequent series Nature Run Amok, a look at animals in the news.
Never pick a fight with an eight-armed opponent
According to a report from Reuters, an Australian author and his family were on holiday at a resort when an octopus whipped the absolute dog snot out of him.

Hollifield: Where Ramona the Pest meets Gus the Ranger

In the afterlife of art and literature, in the sweet by and by, I imagine retired Texas Ranger Gus McRae on the porch of the celestial ranch house teasing Ramona the Pest and whistling for that old dog Ribsy to run the pigs out of the yard.
Two literary giants, Beverly Cleary and Larry McMurtry, died on the same day, March 25, 2021.
Cleary was 104. During her career, she sold more than 90 million copies of her books, most of which chronicled the adventures of Ramona (the Pest) Quimby, her big sister Beezus, Henry Huggins and his dog, Ribsy.
McMurtry was 84. The Pulitzer Prize-winner penned dozens of books, including “The Last Picture Show,” “Terms of Endearment,” and the greatest western adventure ever written, “Lonesome Dove.”

Hollifield: Clarifying a controversial Potato Head stance

And now, for a Potato Head update.
Last week, I attempted to poke a little fun at those outraged by toymaker Hasbro’s announcement that it would rebrand Mr. Potato Head as simply Potato Head in an effort to be more gender neutral. I suggested that getting one’s knickers in a knot over something as inconsequential as a company rebrand of one of the most boring toys of my generation was distracting us from actual problems like deadly viruses, attempted insurrections and the seasonal increase in beer prices.
Judging from the reaction to the column, I underestimated either the public’s reverence for this particular classic toy or the importance of potato gender and courtesy titles.

Hollifield: Mr. Potato Head in the eye of the outrage storm

Mr. Potato Head is back in the news — wait, was Mr. Potato Head ever previously in the news? I seem to remember unsubstantiated reports of a harassment suit from Barbie’s lawyers back in the 1990s, but it appears that matter was settled out of court and never discussed publicly again.
According to media outlets that cover fake outrage and potato-related matters, including The New York Times, toymaker Hasbro initially announced in February it was dropping “Mr.” from the brand name, making the Potato Head characters more gender neutral.
“Hasbro is making sure all feel welcome in the Potato Head world by officially dropping the Mr. from the Mr. Potato Head brand name and logo to promote gender equality and inclusion,” the company said in a statement.

Hollifield: They'll scam the shirt right off your back | Local News

Valentine’s Day has come and gone but romance scams continue all year long, according to various email warnings I received from the likes of the Better Business Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission and some guy named Rick.
I must be on a list of “most likely to fall prey to romance scams,” but I learned my lesson years ago when a girl in third grade sent a note reading, “Do you like me? Check yes or no.” I checked yes, she took my strawberry ice cream cup at lunch, and then would not talk to me at recess.
I don’t think it seriously affected my future relationships, but it did ruin strawberry ice cream for me.

Hollifield: Stomp out governmental regulation of Bigfoot

If there is one thing I can’t stand, it is government overregulation of cryptozoological creatures.
There are actually several things I can’t stand — someone putting an empty steak sauce bottle back in the refrigerator, irresponsible dog owners and people with Facebook medical degrees, just to name a few.
This week, though, it is government overregulation of cryptozoological creatures, specifically Bigfoot.
Regular readers of this column know I am a citizen of the city that proudly hosts the annual Western North Carolina (WNC) Bigfoot Festival during non-plague years.
Those same readers may even recall I performed as Bigfoot’s stand-in a few times, climbing into the suit for both promotional and educational efforts, such as the non-award-winning documentary “Bigfoot Tells Fifth-Graders about Trees.”
