At first glance, the story of Michelle Barrientes Vela had all the trappings of a political fairy tale. Once an unpaid, reserve deputy at Bexar County Constable’s Office Precinct 2, Barrientes Vela became the elected Constable after winning the 2016 election. She finished second among five Democratic candidates in the March primary that year, then won the run-off held two and a half months later. That November she captured more than 66% of the vote on her way to joining a shortlist of women to serve as constable in Bexar County. ....

DETROIT – It was almost exactly a year ago when a wave of COVID patients was starting to overwhelm hospitals.
A Metro Detroit nurse took a video inside Sinai Grace Hospital and spoke about the need for more supplies.
Local 4 Defender Shawn Ley spoke with Kenisa Barkai. She said she has found new ways to help in the fight against COVID-19.
Last year, Barkai said that she was drawing attention to the hospital and trying to make it clear that they needed more PPE and beds for what she foresaw as a wave of COVID patients that were about to hit. The hospital said that the cellphone video violated hospital policy and Barkai was fired. ....

DETROIT – The Joe Biden Administration officially announced Friday morning it will be working with state officials to build a new major Community Vaccination Center (CVC) in Detroit.
“I’m pleased to announce the addition of a new FEMA-supported site in Detroit,” said White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Jeff Zients. “This site, located at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, has the ability to administer 6,000 shots per day.”

SAN ANTONIO – A CPS Energy senior director sought to keep information about pump station power outages confidential last month as the city’s water situation worsened, according to emails obtained by the KSAT 12 Defenders.
Clayton Kruse, the utility’s senior director of military and managed accounts, provided an update to a San Antonio Water System vice president Feb. 17 about which pump sites currently had power.
“Attached is a status of power to your pump stations. Confidential please,” wrote Kruse in the email sent at 1:58 p.m. ....
