Growing up on her family’s dairy farm in Kentucky, Bobbie Ann Mason ’72 Ph.D., ’02 H explored the natural world unfolding all around her. The farm was at the very center of her family, but even as a young girl, she knew she wanted a different life.
She loved to read, she says “The Bobbsey Twins,” Nancy Drew mysteries, and “Little Women.”
The event, which was hosted by the Kentucky Book Festival, took place virtually via zoom and Facebook.
During the event, House reflected on writing “Clay’s Quilt” and his other novels. House shared, with Correll and the audience, some of the inspirations for his books, including the stories he asked to hear from older family members when he was young and the community of Lily where he grew up.
House grew up around people with a natural ability for oral tradition. His version of storytelling came in written form.
“Since I was often too bashful to do that [orally tell stories], I wrote the stories down instead, so I would say that my being a writer absolutely stems from that desire to tell a story,” said House.

LeVar Burton, the actor and longtime host of
Reading Rainbow, has been named the inaugural PEN/Faulkner Literary Champion, a new annual commendation that will recognize devoted literary advocacy and a commitment to inspiring new generations of readers and writers, the PEN/Faulkner Foundation said in a release. Burton will be honored in a virtual celebration on May 10, when this year’s PEN/Faulkner Award winner its 40th will be announced.
“I come from a family for whom service to others is the highest possible calling,” Burton said. “Whatever efforts I have made toward advancing the cause of literacy, give honor to my mother, Erma Gene Christian, my first teacher and from whom I have inherited my love for books and reading.
