PHI Issues Research Brief Entitled 'The Direct Services Workforce In Long-Term Services and Supports in Maryland and the District of Columbia'

Maryland is also a microcosm of
the United States when it comes to population change and the growing crisis in care for older adults and individuals with disabilities. Within the next decade, the number of adults aged 65 and older in
Maryland and its urban neighbor, the
District of Columbia (DC), is expected to increase by more than 330,000 (a 36 percent increase from 2015 to 2025), while the population of working-age adults will increase by less than 80,000 (just 2 percent)./1
Mirroring national realities, these trends contribute to a growing mismatch between the population demand for long-term services and supports (LTSS) and the supply of direct services workers who provide them. The poor quality of direct services jobs exacerbates this workforce shortage, as workers move to other sectors that offer better wages and benefits, more stable hours, opportunities for advancement, and other advantages./2 ....

Long-term urban land use land cover change (LULCC) dynamics and climate change trends in Southwest Ethiopia s four urban centers were examined for 60 years. Remote sensing, aerial photos, and Landsat, temperature, and rainfall data were analyzed from a climate change perspective over the Jimma, Bedelle, Bonga, and Sokorru urban centers of southwest Ethiopia from 1953 to 2018. Based on geospatial analysis and maximum likelihood supervised image classification techniques to classify LULCC categories, the Mann-Kendall test was applied to perform trend analyses on temperature and rainfall. The LULCC analysis revealed that built-up areas over the urban centers had shown an increasing trend, with the highest increment by 2,360 hectares over Jimma, while vegetation, wetland, and cropland declined due to conversion of plain lands to built ....

The financial argument for a diverse client base: Travel Weekly

It s morally important to have a diverse client base.
Cathy Brooks-Oliver, owner of CBO Custom Travel in Scottsdale, Ariz., believes so, emphatically. I m a citizen of this world, and specifically, I am a citizen of the United States. I want my client base to reflect the environment and world that I move in.
And there is also a compelling financial argument behind diversifying your client base.
In a 2018 study, Mandala Research found that Black travelers contributed $63 billion to the U.S. travel and tourism economy, up 31% from $48 billion in 2010. Last month, new research from MMGY Global found that Black leisure travelers spent $109.4 billion on travel in 2019. It s difficult to compare similar, but different studies, yet even so, the increase from Mandala s 2018 number to MMGY s 2019 number would represent a whopping 73%. ....
