Alaska psychiatrist charged with punching man in Juneau grocery store acquitted on basis of self-defense

Print article
An Alaska psychiatrist criminally charged for punching a man in a grocery store in June was acquitted after a two-day trial in Juneau last month.
The misdemeanor assault charge against Joshua Sonkiss, 50, made headlines during the tense pandemic summer in part because police said the psychiatrist punched a man in the face because he wasn’t wearing a mask.
That’s not what happened, Sonkiss says.
In an interview last week, Sonkiss said he went to a Juneau Fred Meyer to pick up groceries and cleaning supplies. He was standing at the checkout register when a man and his young son stepped close to him. Sonkiss says he asked the two to step back. They were not wearing masks, but many people weren’t at grocery stores in Juneau around that time, according to Sonkiss. ....

'So, so exciting': Second wave of COVID-19 vaccine distributions begins in Alaska as Moderna shipments arrive

Print article
The first shipments of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine the second to receive federal approval arrived in Alaska on Monday as vaccinations that started last week extended into some of the state’s most remote regions.
Meanwhile, state and federal officials are trying to figure out why about a third of the half-dozen severe reactions to the vaccine officially reported in the U.S. so far have occurred in Alaska. Officials say reactions have been rare, and far more treatable than the virus can be.
The state’s first vaccine arrived a week ago: the start of 35,100 doses manufactured by Pfizer coming to the state in two pulses. As of Sunday, 5,674 doses had been administered, according to the state’s vaccine webpage, ....

JUNEAU, Alaska - A health care worker in Alaska is doing well  after suffering an adverse reaction minutes after receiving Pfizer s COVID-19 vaccine, officials said. The health care worker, who was identified as a middle-aged woman, had an allergic reaction that included flushing and shortness of breath within 10 minutes of receiving the first of Pfizer s two-dose jab on Tuesday.
She was still being observed in Bartlett Hospital s foyer at the time of the incident.
The woman, whose name is being withheld, suffered an anaphylactic reaction that required hospitalization and monitoring, and will not be receiving the second dose of the vaccine, officials said during a press briefing on Wednesday. She had no prior history of allergies and took a Benadryl to relieve the symptoms but it did not work. ....

First shot: COVID-19 vaccines arrive on island

As of Wednesday afternoon, 21 caregivers at Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center had received the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19.
First in line was Dr. Dana Kerr, an emergency room physician at the hospital who got the vaccine on Tuesday evening. Kerr has been treating the growing wave of patients with the virus over the past few weeks in Kodiak, putting her squarely into the first tier of Alaskans designated to get the vaccine.
She also volunteered, having tracked the vaccine’s development for months with pharmacist Stephanie Hurley and others at the hospital.
“We had been talking quite a bit about it since May. … They had asked who would be willing to take it first, and I had volunteered,” Kerr said.  ....
