Earlier this spring, 25 up-and-coming theatre makers completed the inaugural Producing 101 course from Theatre Producers of Color. The program, committed to supporting the next generation of BIPOC producers, ran for 10 weeks and taught the fundamentals of commercial producing, including development paths, financing, and budgeting, with experienced BIPOC and white ally leaders as their guides.

The 2021 edition of the Tribeca Festival is adding a brand new competition to its lineup, focusing on some up-and-coming video games that players will be excited to check out. Back in 2011, Rockstar s L.A. Noire was the first game to make its debut at Tribeca, and now the festival is making a move to showcase even more from the world of gaming. On Thursday, Tribeca announced the roster of games that will be competing for the first ever Tribeca Games Award.
Like the films at the festival, the games at Tribeca will be experienced by both judges and fans. Players at home can sign up for exclusive digital demos of the games beginning May 24th, and those who get access will be able to play at some point during the competition, which runs from June 11th to June 20th. Footage of the games will be streamed for free online as part of the Summer Game Fest. ....

Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation has named Sharifa Yasmin the inaugural recipient of the Barbara Whitman Award.
Established by producer Whitman, the award recognizes a female, trans, or non-binary early-career director who has demonstrated a unique vision in their work with a $10,000 cash prize.
Finalists were directors Ty Defoe, Miranda Haymon, Tara Moses, Aya Ogawa, Tatiana Pandiani, and Mei Ann Teo.
Yasmin said, Being a part of trans and Arab American communities, we are so often told that we donât matterâthat our voices are insignificant. I became a director to change what stories are being told, to uplift voices that are so often silenced, to tell myself and my communities that we are here and we deserve to be heard. âIt s important that young artists feel itâs important to choose to develop their work in the way that they think is going to be helpful to them. I don t think it is as helpful for lots of outside people to go, âHere, do it this way, do it this way. Here, you re BIPOC, you can have this, you can have that.â There are going to be people who do well with that, but that, in my experience, wasn t the thing that was helpful. It s going to sound contradictory, but the struggle actually helped me. Even though there were moments during the struggle where I was like, âOh my god, this is the worst thing ever,â I wanted to do it more than the worst thing ever. The thing I would hope is that if they don t want to do it, then they won t. Feeling like you have to do it just to feel something is a kind of poison in you. Sometimes saying no is going to save your soul. You can also say that the struggle is worth it, and that is also valid.â ....
