Two more students sue Barbour County school board for threats by classmate

PHILIPPI Two more Philip Barbour High School students say the Barbour County Board of Education failed to adequately protect them when another student brought a gun to school and threatened a class full of students.
Traeton Long and his parents Christopher and Vanessa Long also were named as defendants in the suits filed in Barbour Circuit Court.
The unnamed plaintiffs, identified as M.J. and R.S., were ninth-grade students under the age of 16, along with Traeton Long. During the 2015-16 school year, the defendants failed to recognize Traeton Long s behavioral patterns and failed to refer him to properly address his behaviors, according to the suits. ....

Carol Lynn Smithson Sinsel, 64, of 167 Cole Street, Philippi, went to the feet of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Jan. 12, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
She is the daughter of Anna Gale Roberts Smithson and the late V.L. “Sonny” Smithson of Belington. She was born Jan. 28, 1956, in Parsons.
She married Steven Hall Sinsel, who has been a wonderful husband and care giver, on Aug. 20, 1977, at the Belington Baptist Church. They had celebrated 43 years of marriage.
Surviving are her daughters, Stephanie Danielle Sinsel and granddog, Neiko, of Morgantown, Bronlyn Nicole Smith and husband, Ben; and her precious granddaughters, Maggie Jade and Mia Kathryn, also of Morgantown. ....

Former student blames school board, others for not protecting him from hostage situation

PHILIPPI – A former student says the Barbour County Board of Education failed to adequately protect him when another student brought a gun to school and threatened a class full of students.
Mason Bruce Campbell filed his complaint in Barbour Circuit Court against the school board, Traeton Long and his parents Vanessa L. and Christopher G. Long.
According to the complaint, Campbell was a freshman at Philip Barbour High School in Philippi during the 2015-16 school year. Traeton Long also was a PBHS freshman, and Campbell says Long had an “extensive history of violent, disruptive and anti-social behavior in school.”
Campbell also says Long placed a great deal of importance on his relationship with his girlfriend, saying he was extremely jealous and took actions to control her movements, decision-making and relationships. ....
