NASHVILLE Tennessee’s State Veterinarian wants to make citizens aware that an outbreak of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 (RHDV2) has been detected near the Tennessee border in Arkansas. There have been no cases found in Tennessee, but rabbit owners should be mindful of the heightened risk.
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease does not affect humans or other animals. However, it is highly contagious and fatal to domestic rabbits, wild hares, and pika. RHDV2 can be transmitted through direct contact with infected rabbits or carcasses, meat or fur, feces, bodily fluids, bedding material, feed and water bowls, and hay. ....

The skylarks rose with the sun over the Quantocks, pouring their song into the north wind sweeping in from the Bristol Channel. I was there just before dawn for the annual spring deer count. Volunteers spent two hours recording the number, species, location and type of deer seen across the area. ....

Police in Ohio have posted images of a raccoon that broke into the home of a resident in the city of North Ridgeville and fell asleep in the dishwasher.
After spotting the crafty mammal, the resident contacted North Ridgeville Police Department to notify them of the situation.
The department then dispatched patrolman John Metzo, who they describe as their Absurd Animal Call Officer.
In a Facebook post, the department said the raccoon apparently busted through the bathroom light, ransacked the kitchen, then took a well deserved nap in the washer. ....

West Indian manatees in Florida have been dying at an unprecedented rate over the past few months, with one expert worried that the animals could be wiped out from an important hub the Indian River Lagoon by the end of the year.
At least 432 manatees have died in the state so far this year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This stands in stark contrast to the 637 manatee deaths in all of 2020 and the annual average of 578 deaths between 2016 and 2020. ....

Hedgehogs seem to be the stuff of picture books from Britain or characters from American animation films, but they are living, breathing mammals and three different species of hedgehogs inhabit the Indian subcontinent alone. Of these, the Madras Hedgehog
(Paraechinus nudiventris) is very poorly studied, said Brawin Kumar, ecologist and conservationist, who is working to save this endemic species from obscurity, even possible oblivion. The Kanyakumari-born researcher recalled his first sighting of the spiny animal, resembling “a small bunch of twigs arranged with utmost care”, as it ambled about in the scrub looking for food. ....
