This week marks one year of the Teagasc “Signpost Webinar Series” which covers environmental topics. The webinar, today, Thursday 1 April, was about ‘Multispecies Swards - sward and animal performance under reduced nitrogen fertiliser inputs’ with speakers Dr Helen Sheridan and Professor Tommy Boland, UCD providing their insights.
One year of Teagasc Signpost Webinar Series
The Teagasc “Signpost Series” is presented in association with Dairy Sustainability Ireland, Food Drink Ireland Skillnet and the National Rural Network. Since its first episode in the early days of the first lockdown, in April 2020, the series has gone from strength to strength and has broadcast weekly episodes every Friday morning from 9.30-10.30 covering environmental topics such as climate change, biodiversity, soil health, nutrient management and water quality. ....

Mark Gibson, Teagasc ConnectEd and Pat Murphy, Head of Teagasc Environment KT were joined by Elaine Leavy, Organic Specialist, Teagasc on Friday, 22 January, to discuss various steps you can take to covert to organic farming and some opportunities to exploit in switching to organic farming.
Only 2% of Ireland’s land cover is under organic production. Elaine outlines that biodiversity is a key component that has come to the fore in EU policy around organic farming practices going forward into the future. A Q&A session took place at the end of Elaine s presentation

6 areas of attention for dairy industry following 'stellar' 2020 performance

Irish dairy and specialised nutrition exports delivered a “stellar performance” for the Irish economy in 2020, when considering the challenges posed during the year, according to Dairy Industry Ireland (DII).
The Ibec association representing the Irish dairy and specialised nutrition sector was commenting following the publication of Bord Bia’s Export Performance and Prospects report this morning (Wednesday, January 13).
Today’s report showed a 3% uplift in dairy exports to €5.2 billion – despite the challenges to the industry from the Covid-19 pandemic and the disruption of Brexit.
The industry-led strategy of aggressively diversifying Irish dairy markets in preparation for Brexit is also paying dividends – with almost half of exports now going outside both the UK and the EU – DII noted. ....
