The shrinking middle-class - The Hindu BusinessLine

The shrinking middle-class
The dynamic class has been hit by the ‘pandemic’ blow
The second wave of Covid-19 has left an indelible mark on India’s self-image and public confidence. People are gasping even for an ounce of oxygen, while a bleak future stares at them.
According to a Pew Research Centre report, India’s middle-class population shrunk by at least 32 million with 75 million people driven below the poverty line in 2020. India contributed 60 per cent to the worldwide drop in the middle-class population. This will surely impact India’s already slowing economy.
Since 1990, the 20-fold rise in the middle group has set the tone of Indian economic growth. The middle-class makes up 28 per cent of the total population and 79 per cent of the total taxpayer base. It also contributes 70 per cent to the total consumer spending. It actively participates in the real estate and equity markets and promotes innovation. ....

Climate Change, Armed Conflict and Humanitarian Organizations: Defining Their Role, Greening Their Response

Climate Change, Armed Conflict and Humanitarian Organizations: Defining Their Role, Greening Their Response
Humanitarian actors play a critical role in responding to climate-related crises, armed conflict, or a combination of both. Their response comes with an environmental cost. Humanitarian staff air travel, for instance, represents a significant source of carbon emissions and humanitarian logistics remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels. As the demand for humanitarian response climbs and countries increase their commitments to curb climate change, a question arises: Can humanitarian organizations mitigate their environmental impact and remain effective in responding to the consequences of armed conflict and climate impacts? ....

Starting July 15, roughly 39 million households covering 88 percent of children in the United States will begin receiving monthly payments as part of an expanded child tax-credit program projected to lift more than 5 million children out of poverty this year, cutting child poverty by more than half, said the Treasury Department on Monday.
The payments, called Child Tax Credit (CTC), are part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021, a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that President Joe Biden signed in March to lessen the impact of COVID-19 and revive the economy. ....

COVID-19 Vaccine Rumors and Conspiracy Theories: The Need for Cognitive Inoculation against Misinformation to Improve Vaccine Adherence

Roy)
Herd immunity against misinformation and conspiracy theories is required to ensure herd immunity against SARS-CoV-2..The diverse amount of circulating COVID-19 vaccine misinformation could undermine the universal rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine candidates.
Historically, negative claims about vaccine effectiveness have affected vaccine uptake. For example, a boycott of the oral polio vaccine due to rumours that the vaccine caused infertility led to increased polio cases in Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Continuous exposure to social media and online anti-vaccine movement may influence people to share and communicate vaccine misinformation and conspiracy theories. Monitoring this media data is one method for tracking misinformation in real time and is a possible way to dispel misinformation and optimise vaccine acceptance. This study examined COVID-19 vaccine rumours and conspiracy theories circulating on online platforms, seeking to understand their context and ....
