David T. Davis 1936-2021


David was born in Bigfork, MN, January 1936 to the late Florence and George Davis.
He graduated from Bigfork HIgh School in 1954. During his teen years, he worked at his dad’s lumber mill and the first potato farm. He enlisted in the army in 1955 and was sent to Germany in the fall of 1956. While there, he met his future wife, Anna A.
Upon returning to Minnesota, David began his career with the Forest Service, retiring in 1985 after 26 years. During this time, he and his family gradually started a milk dairy - retiring from that in 1998.
David’s heart and soul was about being a good steward of the land. He served as chairman on the St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation Board for 32 years. He was described by a member there as “kind, calm, generous, vibrant,” and “he was a wonderful chair of the board for so many years.” ....

Tourism plays big part in county's economy | News


Local businesses must decrease hours of operation because they cannot find employees
Itasca County proclaimed the week of May 2-8, 2021 as National Travel and Tourism Week. The proclamation came during the Itasca County Board work session on Tuesday. 
Travel and tourism have been a consistent driver of Itasca County’s economy and workforce. Last year, government shutdowns following the corona virus pandemic devastated the travel industry, including Itasca County. 
According to the proclamation, domestic and international travelers in Minnesota declined by 44 percent in 2020. Federal, state, and local tax receipts declined by 36 percent in Minnesota. 
Visit Grand Rapids Executive Director Megan Christianson said travel spending decreased in Minnesota by $7.1 billion in 2020. This was following a banner year in 2019 when leisure and hospitality gross sales increased 3.5 percent and visitation grew at a 2.6 percent average annual rate between 2017 and 20 ....

Bigfork High School may be small, but its robotics team is mighty. On Saturday, April 17, the team traveled to Bemidji to compete in the Northern Minnesota Robotics Conference (NMRC). There, they upset the number one seed to take home the first place trophy.
“The team and their alliance members battled hard and overcame many obstacles to pull off this win. It is well deserved,” said Erin Pocquette Robotics Team advisor and Bigfork High School math and science teacher.
The team pulled off the win in a tie-breaker round despite the usual robot driver out of the competition. The team also faced an uphill battle when the robot needed a last minute adjustment and the team programmer was out of state on vacation.  ....

For Gabriel Pascuzzi, one of two Portland-area chefs competing on “Top Chef” Season 18, having the show finally come to town in 2020 provided a much-needed boost for the local food scene. “It’s kind of the perfect timing,” Pascuzzi says, in that the cooking competition series, which airs weekly on the Bravo cable channel, gives Oregon food and dining a positive national spotlight. ....
