Erie federal court: 3,000 mailed fentanyl pills net lengthy prison sentence


He mailed fentanyl pills from California to Millcreek Township in May 2020
At sentencing, judge says Gutierrez was a dealer, despite his claims otherwise
After it was placed in the U.S. mail in California in May 2020, a package containing as many as 3,000 fentanyl pills was pulled from delivery before it reached its destination: a house in Millcreek Township.
Postal inspectors intercepted the parcel, launching an investigation that has sent the shipper to federal prison for nearly seven years.
The shipper, Victor D. Gutierrez, 48, claimed at his sentencing in U.S. District Court in Erie on Thursday that his opioid addiction fueled his involvement in multiple mailed shipments of large amounts of illegal drugs from California to the Erie area in 2019 and 2020, culminating with the fentanyl pills. ....

US Justice Department sues Oil City landlords, claims sexual harassment


OIL CITY  A woman who lived in a rented house since late 2017 suddenly found herself facing eviction in the spring of 2019.
The reason, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, was that the tenant had complained that her landlord had sexually harassed her by touching her without her consent and trying to kiss her.
“You are out, the landlord s wife said in a text message to the tenant on April 28, 2019, according to the Justice Department.
You got 10 days, other texts said. You are a liar.”
That same day, the tenant got a notice to vacate, the Justice Department said. ....

Erie School District to sue e-cigarette maker Juul over youth vaping

Juul says it aims to reset vapor category in the U.S.
The Erie School District is joining scores of public school districts and other government entities nationwide in taking legal action over underage vaping.
The Erie School Board has authorized the district to sue Juul Labs Inc., claiming the nation s largest electronic cigarette company wrongfully marketed its products   with their streamlined designs and fruity flavors   to youth, spurring a vaping epidemic among students, harming their health and adding to the district s costs.
The School Board at its monthly meeting on Wednesday night unanimously approved a representation agreement with three law firms to pursue the litigation against Juul, the first step in what will lead to the filing of a lawsuit in what could be U.S. District Court in Erie. ....

Erie County Judge Marshall Piccinini is running for election


Two years into his tenure as an appointed Erie County judge, Marshall J. Piccinini is seeking election to a full 10-year term on the local bench.
Piccinini, a former assistant U.S. attorney in Erie who handled the pizza bomber case, announced his election bid on Tuesday in an address livestreamed on his campaign s Facebook page.
Piccinini was sworn in as an appointed Common Pleas Court judge in June 2019. Since then he has handled a range of cases: civil and criminal cases and family law and juvenile law matters. He said he has enjoyed the ability to actually help people solve their problems as a judge. ....
