India-Bangladesh relations improving despite Covid jab hiccup

NEW DELHI: India and Bangladesh have seen a spurt in bilateral engagement of late with gifts being exchanged across the border and also a series of meetings between top leaders of the two countries.
The spurt is being viewed by analysts as a way to reduce the friction seen in the ties due to India’s non-fulfilment of vaccine commitments. New Delhi has so far supplied around 103 lakh doses of Indian-made AstraZeneca vaccines commercially and as a grant. However, as the second wave of the pandemic came, India forced the Serum Institute of India (SII), the manufacturer of vaccines in India, to defer orders. ....

Afghanistan poised on cusp of civil war

The current situation in Afghanistan is fraught with uncertainty. The risk of another civil war is looming large. The Soviet Union’s army went into Afghanistan in 1979 to support a socialist-secular government. The Americans collaborated with Pakistan and other Islamic countries and created Al-Qaeda and the Mujahideens who launched a jihad against the Soviets. Pakistan’s contribution included the creation of the Taliban from among Afghan refugees who were indoctrinated, trained and armed for jihad to liberate their country from godless communists. The Soviets were forced into a humiliating retreat in 1989. Now, the Americans have decided to eat humble pie and exit Afghanistan after 20 years. Afghanistan’s reputation as the graveyard of empires stands refurbished.  ....

Hardliner 'wins' Iran's Presidential polls

Iran’s unique “Mullahcracy” has elected an ultraconservative cleric Ebrahim Raisi, head of the country’s judiciary, as the new President. He is a protégé of the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who is kind of a dictator for life. The election has been dubbed as rigged and seen widely as “selection”, rather than an outcome of an open, free and fair nomination and voting process. The 60-yearold Raisi has no political experience and his career in the judiciary has been highly controversial. He played an important role in mass imprisonments of journalists, political activists and dual American-Iranian citizens. His role in a 1988 commission led to execution of thousands of political prisoners for which he came under American sanctions for alleged human rights abuses. ....

India-US ties: Overcoming hesitation

India-US ties: Overcoming hesitation
The ties between Delhi and Washington seemed headed for the doldrums due to a policy error on Biden’s part, but the US reversal is a good sign for both nations

The Biden administration had earlier invoked the US Defense Production Act to ban the export of critical raw material for the production of vaccines.
The air bridge bringing in American assistance to India to combat the Chinese-origin Covid pandemic is in operation, putting an end to the uncertainty and hesitation that marked the Biden administration’s initial stand on this issue. Indians growing up in the 1960s remember the PL-480 wheat shipments for a grain-starved India were each personally authorised by President Lyndon Johnson. He was irritated by India’s stand on the Vietnam war. The American State Department’s official spokesperson’s comments that the nation’s obligation devolved first on its own citizens and this w ....
