Hours after five people were wounded in a Bourbon Street shooting, voters in the French Quarter revived a quarter-cent sales tax Saturday that they chose not to renew last year. The nearly quarter-cent sales tax will only be collected with the French Quarter Economic Development District, with tourists expected to contribute the bulk of the revenue. The renewal of the prior tax failed in December, when Mayor LaToya Cantrell had proposed using the money to pay for quality of life officers who would not have arrest powers.The proposal approved Saturday uses the first $2 million in tax revenue for off-duty police patrols. Any additional money will go toward public safety programs, including homeless assistance.The tax was approved despite opp ....
