France is likely to remain the UK’s undisputed top wine supplier despite the challenges posed by Brexit, climate change and rising international competition. EURACTIV France reports.
In 2020, British importers spent an amount of £733 million (€844 million) on wine from France, making the country the UK’s leading supplier, ahead of Italy, New Zealand, Australia and Spain.
Apart from a slight fall in exports to the UK last year due to the pandemic and related restrictions, the additional administrative burdens brought by Brexit do not seem to have left too much of a mark. ....

French winemakers 'stand to lose nearly €1 billion to US tariffs'

French wine producers are calling on the government to take tough decisions as they say new US tariffs could see them losing nearly a billion euros in exports this year.
The US and the European Union have been locked in a dispute over aircraft subsidies for years which escalated in October 2019 when Washington slapped 25% tariffs on a number of European products. Brussels swiftly announced retaliatory tariffs.
French still non-sparkling wine with an alcohol level of up to 14 degrees and in bottles of under two litres were included in the US list.
According to the French Federation of Wine and Spirit Exporters (FEVS), the tariffs cost French producers more than €600 million in 2020, with exports to the US falling by 50% compared to the previous year. ....

PARIS French wine exporters are warning that they’ll take a billion-euro hit in 2021 from the latest ratcheting-up of punitive tariffs between the United States and Europe in a trade row over aircraft subsidies.
The U.S. government announced Wednesday the imposition of additional tariffs on French and German wines and brandies, as well as aircraft manufacturing parts. They are the latest round of tit-for-tat tariffs in a years-long conflict over subsidies to plane makers Boeing and Airbus.
The French Federation of Wine and Spirits Exporters on Thursday decried the U.S. measures as “a sledgehammer blow” and estimated they could cost the sector more than 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion). ....
