Experts reveal global 'hot spots' where new coronaviruses may emerge

Experts have revealed the global hot spots where new deadly coronaviruses may emerge, driven by global changes in land use by humans.
Forest fragmentation, agricultural expansion and livestock production are all bringing humans into closer contact with horseshoe bats, which are known to carry zoonotic diseases, including Covid-19.
Conditions are ripe for the diseases to jump from bats to humans, particularly in China, where a growing demand for meat products has driven expansion of large-scale, industrial livestock farming.
Concentrated livestock production is concerning because it brings together large populations of genetically similar, often immune-suppressed animals that are highly vulnerable to disease outbreaks, the researchers say. ....

Chaos is opportunity for Myanmar's drug trafficking syndicates

Apr 5, 2021
Mainland Southeast Asia is bracing for a surge of illegal methamphetamines from eastern Myanmar, as a result of pandemic-related supply gluts and a likely increase in production due to Myanmar’s growing political crisis.

Despite tanking economies across the region, the pandemic year of 2020 was good for Myanmar’s drug-trafficking syndicates, which have long thrived in the contested upland zones of eastern Myanmar. Last year, the United Nations Office on Drugs on Crime (UNODC) reported that the price of methamphetamines in East and Southeast Asia had dropped to its lowest level in 10 years, as the market became overwhelmed with supply. ....

Thailand-U.S. policy: A time for divorce?

Thailand-U.S. policy: A time for divorce?
The Monroe News
Thailand is a nation of 70 million people on Mainland Southeast Asia, on the Chao Phraya river system, in the neighborhood of Vietnam and Burma (Myanmar). The People’s Republic of China (herein China) is to the near north. Thailand became the most significant ally of the United States in Southeast Asia after the Korean War began in 1950; more important, I believe, than South Vietnam.
I believe that special relationship is coming to an end with the rise of China. China is now Thailand’s leading trading partner and military exchanges have grown. Shambaugh, Where Great Powers Meet. To paraphrase Lord Palmerston:  nations have neither permanent friends nor enemies, only eternal interests. It is time for Thailand and the United States to move on. ....
