The top of both major-party tickets was set in primaries in New Jersey and
Virginia, the two states holding elections in this off-year (along with a gubernatorial recall in California). And there were no real surprises.
In Virginia, former Governor Terry McAuliffe routed a strong field to win a chance to post the third straight Democratic victory in a Virginia gubernatorial race. He carried every city and county in the state while winning 62 percent of the vote overall. State Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy, who ran to McAuliffe’s left and won some key progressive endorsements, finished second with just under 20 percent of the vote. State senator Jennifer McClellan was third with 12 percent. Virginia held its Democratic Primary Election on Tuesday, yielding a victory for one of several women of color candidates who sought to lead the Commonwealth.
Hala Ayala, the first Afro-Latina elected to Virginia’s General Assembly, won the June 8 primary, advancing in her quest to become the state’s next Lieutenant Governor. RICHMOND (WINA) – Former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe easily wins the opportunity to serve for a second time after Democrats chose him as their nominee by a landslide Tuesday. McAuliffe got 62% of the Democratic primary vote to easily outdistance the closest challenger in former state Delegate Jennifer Carrol Foy who got 20%. Only Mills Godwin has served as Governor twice in Virginia’s modern era.
McAuliffe in his acceptance speech talked about how his prior administration, followed by Ralph Northam’s over the past nearly 8 years, has moved Virginia forward by bringing everyone up. He promised “we will not go back”. ....
