Rhode Island Progressives Won Big in 2020 With Help From Youth Activists

One of the biggest and most overlooked election stories may have come out of the country’s smallest state.
Rhode Island, only 1,200 square miles and home to a little more than 1 million people, is rarely the subject of national political interest. With a majority-Democratic legislature, Democratic governor, and an all-Democratic congressional delegation, the state’s politics might seem sleepy to outsiders. Hiding beneath the surface is a much deeper story.
Much of Rhode Island’s Democratic leadership is, put simply, quite conservative. The long-standing (and now outgoing) Democratic Speaker of the House, one of the state’s most powerful elected officials, voted down abortion rights legislation, and has an A rating from the National Rifle Association. Democrats in the state House voted in 2010 to cut taxes for the rich, and in 2011, a majority of Democrats voted for repressive voter I.D. laws. The Rhode Island Democratic State Committee stripped the Women’s Caucus ....

While women have made strides in increasing their representation on company boards of directors in Canada in recent years, it’s a different story for people of colour, notably Blacks.
According to a report the Diversity Insitute at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management published in August, 2020, Black executives are “deeply underrepresented” on boards and vastly outnumbered by other racialized groups.
Although there are no statistics on the number of financial advisors who serve on boards, the representation among Black advisors is minimal, says Michael Collymore, a certified financial planner (CFP) at IPC Investment Corp. in Ajax, Ont. ....

Over the last year and a half, since the publication of my first translated book, I’ve felt it necessary to preface my conversations with aspiring translators by telling them that I know less than they think. This isn’t necessarily a disadvantage and may be helpful in the end. I’ve lately been thinking of C.L.R. James, the Trinidadian Pan-Africanist whose belief in the creativity of “plain” people working democratically outside of capitalist enterprises has soothed me.
