Widening the EU's Geoeconomic and Regulatory Approach to Climate Policy - The EU and Climate Security: Toward Ecological Diplomacy - Carnegie Europe

The global energy transition is seen as an important response to the growing security challenge of climate change. Going low-carbon will alter the way we produce, what we trade, and with whom we exchange goods and services. It will also impact the security landscape: the pathways toward carbon neutrality will unleash political tensions between those with more and those with less ambition and lead to heated debate around how to get to the final destination. As the EU positions itself as a global climate leader through its European Green Deal, it needs to prepare for new types of external policy challenges and must retool its approach to climate security to meet those challenges. This will involve not just the mainstreaming of climate security into standard instruments of EU foreign policy but also questioning how the EU’s determination to be a global decarbonization leader will impact ecological security more broadly. ....

I love Europe, and I want to see the European Union
succeed. I also love
the Internet, and I want to see it thrive as well. And it therefore pains
me that it now appears that the European Union might inadvertently be
picking an ugly fight with “The Internet”.
This directive creates rules for “essential and important entities” so they
adhere to minimum Cybersecurity standards. Although it is for now somewhat
up in the air who exactly would count as such an entity, it is sure to
include national telecommunication companies, Google and many other major ....

Europe Is Poised to Set Climate Standards for the World

A
An emerging flashpoint in America’s relationship with the European Union is the question of who gets to set climate-related standards on energy efficiency, emissions disclosure and other issues. An early indicator of the brewing conflict came last week, when US climate envoy John Kerry cautioned Europeans against adopting a carbon border-adjustment mechanism. Given its recent leadership in global standard-setting and its desire to show independence from the US, Europe may well go ahead either with or without the United States.
A carbon border-adjustment mechanism is effectively a tariff on the carbon content of imports, if those imports don’t meet the standards set within the importing area. Without such a mechanism, efforts to reduce emissions may fail because of carbon leakage. Let’s say, for example, you somehow reduce the emissions involved in producing steel, but that extra effort involves additional cost what Bill Gates calls a “green premium.” S ....

European Parliament backs carbon border tax

European Parliament backs carbon border tax

London | The European Parliament has backed the bloc’s push for a carbon border tax on imports from countries such as Australia, in a plenary vote on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) that gives Brussels the political imprimatur and momentum to press ahead with the plan.
The European Commission is expected to present the details of the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) in June, with a view to getting at least a pilot scheme up and running by the start of 2023.
The European Union is looking for a road out of coal dependency.  ....
