SACRAMENTO Firearm sales surged by 57% in California in 2020 to their highest level in five years.
Attorney General Rob Bonta reported Thursday that Californians legally bought 1,166,836 guns last year, the most since 2016, when 1,276,163 were purchased.
That total includes 686,435 handguns the most in a single year since the state Department of Justice began tracking in 1996 and nearly 66% more than 2019 and 480,401 long guns, up about 46% from the prior year. ....

STOCKTON – California Attorney General Rob Bonta today met with Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln, City Manager Harry Black, Chief of Police Eric Jones, and Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) Director Daniel Muhammed to discuss the success of Stockton’s violence prevention efforts, including the Operation Peacekeeper and Operation Ceasefire programs. OVP’s programs bring together law enforcement, community leaders, and young people and utilize data-driven, partnership-based violence prevention programs and strategies to defuse conflict and tackle gang and gun-related violence within the city of Stockton.
Efforts like these, that bring communities and law enforcement together are a model for how we can protect and enhance public safety in this state, ....
