Children's Fairyland to open its rides to visitors this week

Children’s Fairyland, the beloved amusement park along Oakland’s Lake Merritt, plans to open its rides to patrons on Wednesday, April 7, with a return to live puppet shows and theatrical performances expected later this month.
The East Bay attraction had already opened its gates for the weekends to a reduced number of visitors (1,000 per day) starting March 19, after more than three months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but activities were limited to slides and animal visits. ....

Children's Fairyland reopening soon: Here's what to expect

After having to lock the gates in early December, Oakland’s beloved Children’s Fairyland plans to welcome families back at a limited capacity starting March 19.
Attractions that can soon be enjoyed once more include the slides and some play areas and sets, as well as the gardens. Visitors may also greet Fairyland animals again, like Gideon, the park’s miniature donkey, and Pixie, a miniature horse.
Children’s Fairyland, located along Lake Merritt, made modifications to reopen this month as a zoo, said Fairyland Executive Director Kymberly Miller. Under the state’s updated pandemic protocols, amusement and theme parks in counties that fall under the state’s red tier, such as Alameda County, can open at 15% capacity starting April 1. ....

TAKIYAH FRANKLIN: Before we get started, I’m going to take this moment to give a brief background on the trajectory of the struggles of Black and brown people at UC Berkeley. In 1968 there was a five-month strike that demanded a radical shift in admissions practices. And that was followed swiftly, in 1969, with a three-month strike that led to the creation of the Ethnic Studies department. Fast forward to 1999 and protests against financial cuts to that very department. The protest continued with rallies and sit-ins that led to a five-point agreement and the creation of a research center on campus now called the Center for Race and Gender. ....
