Cairo, Jan 22 (efe-epa).- A decade after the revolution in Egypt that overthrew the long-time dictator President Hosni Mubarak, many of those who took part in the 2011 Arab Spring popular protests have gone into exile. Some were forced to flee the persecution they suffered following the uprising, while others left out of frustration and disappointment that their dreams of a better life went up in smoke.
Particularly since the arrival of current president Abdel Fattah al Sisi in a military coup d’etat in 2013, which put an end to the first attempt at a civilian, democratic government that took over following the revolt, many of its leaders and protagonists have left their homeland, with no idea when they might return. ....

Cairo, Jan 21 (efe-epa).- Qatar is ready to mediate between the United States and Iran, as US President Joe Biden takes over in the White House after the turbulent years of Donald Trump’s administration, according to Qatari deputy foreign minister Lolwah al-Khater.
In a virtual interview with Efe, al-Khater also said that Qatar is committed to engaging in a “constructive dialogue” between Tehran and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf.
“Qatar has expressed its willingness to play such a role, yet we have to be invited by both parties, who are still hesitant to take this step, in terms of entering and engaging in direct negotiations,” said al-Khater. ....

Baghdad/Cairo, Jan 2 (efe-epa).- A year after the assassination of Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani by the United States in Baghdad, Iraq remains caught in crossfire between the US and Iran.
Similar attacks could still play out, although the arrival of the more moderate Joe Biden in the White House makes such a scenario less likely.
