Pen and Sword Books: Britain's Airborne Forces of WWII

The Second World War saw huge advancements in military tactics and technology occurring at an unprecedented pace. One such development was the employment of forces able to deploy at short notice by parachute across the globe, utilising the opportunities created by the advancements in aeronautical technology. These forces were created to deliver an in-depth shock effect, and few have attracted more attention than Britain’s famed Parachute Regiment. This formation was born from the humble beginnings of a fledgling unit drawn together from the British Army and Royal Air Force after Winston Churchill called for a new capability to be created following German airborne successes in the opening stages of the Second World War. ....

Rare folding bicycle carried by British paratroopers on D-Day goes up for auction for £8,000

A rare folding bicycle carried by British paratroopers as they parachuted into occupied Normandy on D-Day has emerged for sale for £8,000.
The Airborne Folding Paratrooper Bicycles were intended to help airborne troops cover the ground quickly and quietly after they landed in France in June 1944.
They were also later used during Operation Market Garden in Holland in September 1944 to allow speedy access to Arnhem Bridge.
But the cumbersome bikes that had to be held out in front of paratroopers as they fell from the sky proved an unpopular distraction for many men.

The Fourth Dimension of Warfare: An Interview With an OSS Veteran

The Fourth Dimension of Warfare: An Interview With an OSS Veteran
John Singlaub served as a covert operative in Europe and the Pacific. Below is Bob Bergin s interview with Singlaub, first published in 2008.
Here s What You Need to Know: Major General John K. Singlaub was a young airborne lieutenant when he took up an offer from the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to become engaged in “hazardous duty behind enemy lines.” He was a participant in Operation Jedburgh and parachuted into occupied France to organize, train, and lead a French Resistance unit. When the Germans were driven from his operational area, he was concerned that he might miss the rest of the war and volunteered for duty in the Far East. He was sent to China, where he trained a guerrilla unit to operate in Japanese-occupied Indochina and just before the Japanese surrender led a dangerous mission to rescue allied POWs on Hainan Island off the Chinese coast. The operations carried out by General Sin ....

Chaplains in World War II: Means of Grace, Hope of Glory

Chaplains in World War II: Means of Grace, Hope of Glory
In two world wars, British and American chaplains risked their lives to bring a fleeting sense of peace and glory to soldiers on the battlefield.
Here s What You Need to Know: The courage and compassion that British and American chaplains demonstrated throughout the war left their mark in the hearts and minds of the men they ministered to and even upon some of the enemy.
They carried no weapons, only holy books and rudimentary vestments, a crucifix or a Star of David and sometimes a little Communion kit. But they were towering figures on the battlefield, symbols of something eternally good in a pitiless world of cruelty, horror, and death. In two cataclysmic world wars, American and British military chaplains served everywhere the armies and navies went, bringing peace where there was no peace and security where there was no security. ....
