Obair Newmarket-on-Fergus – Steeped in Community Development

The late Dr Brendan O’Regan’s legacy to Co Clare lives on, not just through his connection with Shannon Airport and the Shannon Free Zone but in nearby Newmarket-on-Fergus, through Obair.
Immersed is so many aspects of community life in South Clare, this social enterprise was set up in 1993 when Dr O’Regan encouraged a group of like-minded local people to come together to take responsibility for the development of their locality.  And that is what they have just done and continue to do, adapting to and overcoming the many challenges they are faced with, none greater than COVID-19. ....

Harriet Monsell of the O Brien family in Dromoland in 1811 went on to set up an order of nuns and is now considered a saint in the Anglican church. Her story is among those to feature in Long Ago in Newmarket-on-Fergus by Colm Liddy.

AN APPRECIATION of what is local is one of the (few) upsides of lockdown. Being restricted last year to a 2km, and later a 5km radius for exercise, certainly proved productive for Newmarket-on-Fergus author, Colm Liddy. As a self-confessed “stroller,” Colm, a pharmacist by profession, began to see his native place in a new light. Fascinated by traces of past hidden in ruins and monuments dotted around the area, his inquiring mind led him to research colourful characters, locations and incidents dating from the 1600s to the 1980s. The result is a treasure trove of history in Colm’s latest book, ....

Review: Forever - Fresh Fire | Cross Rhythms

Reviewed by Brendan O Regan
This is a pleasantly unusual EP from a South Jersey-based rock band. The female vocals (by Tiandra Jones) are light and self-assured, but by contrast underpinned by a progressive rock sound - driven largely by the insistent bass playing of Ahmad Sanon and Alan Wilkins, especially on the opening track I Am Free , a declaration of confident faith. This is followed by a short instrumental, progressive rock style, but no self-respecting prog rock band would stand over a track one minute 17seconds long - even the solos would last longer! (Admittedly they make up for this somewhat as they play out the final track.) It Will Be Alright is a lighter piece with an emphasis on joy and a welcome reassurance about a brighter day , and there s no doubt about the source of the optimism - after redemption there s forgiveness. In case listeners were concerned it would get too happy-clappy the next song, Stand , tells the story of someone with their back agai ....

Wiston Estate & The Trouble With Dreams (Apr 2021) | Vinous - Explore All Things Wine

Wiston Estate & The Trouble With Dreams
BY NEAL MARTIN | APRIL 01, 2021
There’s nothing that I want to do
More than get alone and be with you
Trouble with dreams is they don t come true
And when they do they can t catch up to you.
“Trouble With Dreams” – The Eels
I miss traveling. It’s not just that the Martin household has made it clear that the sooner their restless husband/father exits the house, the better. Peripatetic in nature, months into lockdown, and my unrequited wanderlust is ready to burst. “Travel” has been reduced to a daily commute down to my garden office, a 10-meter round-trip journey depending on whether I take the scenic route via the fig tree. Denied jaunts to Bordeaux and Chablis last summer, I suffered “VCT” – vineyard cold turkey. Lennon wrote a song about it. My doctor prescribed an aspirin and a couple of estate visits, and so last August I rang the doorbell of two of England’s most prominent wine producer ....
