Roland Begay — a traditional healer in the Navajo Nation — was the first to get vaccinated at Chinle health care facility in Arizona. “I wanted to show that I trusted the scientists who made the vaccine, and the trial study results showed the safety of the vaccine,” he said. Traditional Navajos use a prayer object, like an arrowhead, during a protection ceremony before being vaccinated. “Navajo cultural knowledge is a tool for promoting acceptance of COVID vaccines to keep the people safe and to sustain the Navajo people,” Begay said.

Sheridan, Illinois manhunt causes LaSalle County Sheriff's Office to ask residents to stay inside

SHERIDAN, Ill. (WLS) -- A suspect is in custody after he allegedly shot and killed his former in-laws and threatened his ex-wife in Sheridan, a small town about 70 miles southwest of Chicago.
Law enforcement officials urged some residents to stay inside early Wednesday morning before the 37-year-old suspect was arrested during a LaSalle County manhunt.

The LaSalle County Sheriff provides an update on a suspect taken into custody after a manhunt following the the shooting deaths of two people.
Police say it all started Tuesday night, when a woman called 911 after her ex-husband tried to break into her home. Eventually, police say the suspect shot out her front windows. The woman was injured by the shattered glass.

OTTAWA, Ill. (AP) — A man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly killing his ex-wife's parents and shooting out windows at his ex-wife's house, ending a search that had prompted authorities to urge residents of a small Illinois village not to go outside.
At a press briefing, LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton said that Donald Fredres, 37, of Sandwich, was spotted in a field not far from where the shootings occurred Tuesday night and was taken into custody shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday. Templeton said detectives believe Fredres acted alone so that it was safe for residents in and around the village of Sheridan to return to normal activities.

Sandwich man to be charged for murder of ex-wife's parents

SHERIDAN – Two people were killed and one person injured after being shot allegedly by a Sandwich man on Tuesday. According to the LaSalle County Sheriff’s department, on Tuesday night just before 10 p.m., Sheridan and Sandwich Police were called to the 800 block of West Church Street for an attempted break-in of the residence. The caller stated the windows of the residence had allegedly been shot out. The victim, 37-year-old Janelle Johnson, who was injured from glass fragments as a result of the gunshots, stated to authorities she believed the suspect was her ex-husband. The subject allegedly fled the area, but a black Cadillac parked in the victim’s driveway was found by police upon arrival to the scene. As the search continued, Johnson attempted to contact her parents and later learned through a neighbor that her parents were reportedly unresponsive. Deputies say when they arrived at Johnson’s parent’s house in rural Sheridan, both parents 62-year-old Gregory and Brenda Barnes were shot and pronounced dead at the scene. It was later discovered that the suspect was Johnson’s ex-husband, 37-year-old Donald A. Fredres of Sandwich. On Wednesday morning, Fredres was apprehended outside of Sheridan, north of the Sheridan Correctional Center. He was taken into custody without incident. Charges are pending with the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office.
