Brazil's Bolsonaro vowed to work with Indigenous people. Now he's investigating them

Brazil’s Bolsonaro vowed to work with Indigenous people. Now he’s investigating them
by Mongabay.com on 4 May 2021
At least two top Indigenous leaders in Brazil, Sônia Guajajara and Almir Suruí, were recently summoned for questioning by the federal police over allegations of slander against the government of President Jair Bolsonaro.
Both probes were prompted by complaints filed by Funai, the federal agency for Indigenous affairs, just a week after Bolsonaro pledged at a global leaders’ climate summit to work together with Indigenous peoples to tackle deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon.
The NGO Human Rights Watch said it’s “deeply concerned” about the government’s moves and called any retaliation against Indigenous peoples a “flagrant abuse of power,” while APIB, Brazil’s main Indigenous association, called the government’s approach a “clear attempt to curtail freedom of expression.” ....

Brazil STF Justice Weber halts Bolsonaro's easing on firearms, pending plenum ruling

“Guns acquired legally end up being diverted to crime.,” Justice Weber said.
Justice Rosa Weber of Brazil s Supreme Federal Court (STF), Monday issued a provisional preemptive injunction against parts of decrees from President Jair Bolsonaro which enabled or facilitated the acquisition and use of firearms by regular people.
The magistrate s ruling is valid only until the country s highest court examines the case and delivers a plenum decision. The other members of the court are to start analyzing the case separately this coming Friday and will have one week to cast their votes on the Court s electronic system, without the need to meet to discuss the issue. ....

Landmark decision: Brazil Supreme Court sides with Indigenous land rights

Landmark decision: Brazil Supreme Court sides with Indigenous land rights
by Ana Ionova on 13 April 2021
Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) has unanimously accepted an appeal by the Guarani Kaiowá Indigenous people and agreed to review the process around a past case that cancelled the demarcation of their Indigenous territory.
The Guarani Kaiowá’s decades-long fight for land rights to their ancestral territory, the Guyraroká land in Mato Grosso do Sul state, had been suspended by a 2014 ruling halting the territory’s demarcation process.
The STF’s decision to review the process in the 2014 case, which hadn’t allowed for Indigenous consultation, is seen by analysts as a victory for Indigenous groups in Brazil, and as a setback for President Jair Bolsonaro who has declared his opposition to any Indigenous demarcation occurring during his administration. ....

A 21-year-old from Brazil will become the youngest person in recent decades to be admitted as a member of the New York state bar next Thursday.
Mateus Costa-Ribeiro, who grew up in Brasilia, has already secured quite the list of accomplishments - graduating from Brazil s law school at 18 before he argued a case before the country s highest court.
The way you deal with a client, the way you explain a tough decision that came from a judge, the way you tell someone that he or she is going to jail, you need some kind of life backbone to be able to manage these situations,  Costa-Ribeiro said to the Wall Street Journal when describing the maturity he brings to the courtroom. ....
