(AP) - Carrie Dann, a Native American land rights activist, Nevada rancher and longtime leader of the Western Shoshone Nation, has died. Dann and her older sister Mary Dann, who died in 2005, fought with the federal government for decades over ownership of their ancestral lands in central Nevada. Born in Nevada’s Crescent Valley in 1932, Carrie Dann co-founded the Western Shoshone Defense Project in 1991. TOP STORIES She died Jan. 1 at home of natural causes with family members near, said Julie Cavanaugh-Bill, a friend and lawyer in Elko who worked with Dann on numerous defense project cases. She was believed to be between 86 and 88, but didn’t have a birth certificate, Cavanaugh-Bill said. ....

Several Christmas tree drop-off sites are being set up throughout Greater Saint John. City spokesperson Nathalie Logan said six sites will be open throughout the city between Jan. 1 and 12. They include the Charles Gorman Arena on University Avenue; the Peter Murray Arena on Dever Road; the Hilton Belyea area on Lowell Street; the Forest Hills Ball Field on Westmorland Road; between 30 and 38 Taylor Avenue in Crescent Valley; and at the Old Sugar Refinery site, located at the end of Charlotte Street and Vulcan Street. “Take off all your decorations and lights and trimmings,” said Logan. “Once that’s all set, you can drive it down to your closest location and look for the designated drop-off area, it will be clearly marked in each location.” ....
The Bureau of Land Management seeks public comment on Fire Creek Mine Sage-Grouse Habitat Improvement Project BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management, Mount Lewis Field Office is seeking comments on a draft Environmental Assessment for the Klondex Gold and Silver Mining Company Klondex Fire Creek Mine Greater Sage-Grouse Habitat Improvement Project. The 30-day comment period ends Jan. 28. The project area is located on the northeast flank of the Shoshone Mountains, approximately 37 miles east of Battle Mountain and four miles northwest of Crescent Valley and spans approximately 134 acres of which 71 are public lands. “This project is the result of coordination between the grazing permittee, Klondex, and the Mount Lewis Field Office,” ....

At that time, the Ranch Seco nuclear power plant, a nuclear plant paid for by the taxpayers of Sacramento and owned by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District â aptly nicknamed âSMUDâ â was operating the facility at 40 percent of its capacity. ....
