A Treasury minister played down the prospect of tax rises to fill the coronavirus black hole today amid a Tory backlash against using increases to balance the UK s books. Jesse Norman suggested that if the UK returned to growth quickly enough there was no absolutely obvious need for tax rises - and suggested the economy could be in line for a significant bounce. He attempted to strike a positive tone as the Chancellor Rishi Sunak faced Conservative anger amid claims he wants to hike corporation tax in the March Budget. He is desperately seeking ways to restore the public finances after they were hammered by coronavirus, with fears borrowing will top £400billion this year. ....
