NEW HAVEN Lori Burton wrote timeless songs for The Young Rascals and Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles, and for years co-owned one of the most famous recording studios in the world recording and mastering the likes of John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, Aerosmith, Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.
Much of that happened in New York City.
But long before she and her late former husband, Roy Cicala, bought the Record Plant New York City and started working with some of music’s biggest names, Burton who also sang backup on some of Lennon’s solo albums was born in New Haven in 1940 as Dolores Diana Squeglia. ....

The day before she died, in February 1983, Karen Carpenter rang producer Phil Ramone to discuss “our fucking record” – the 1980 solo album her label refused to release. When its contents were unveiled on posthumous Carpenters’ albums, their decision appeared baffling, as evidenced by I Had You: her patent brand of melancholy given a smooth, shiny funk makeover.

The musical, directed by Lapine, stars Donna Murphy as Fosca, Jere Shea as Giorgio and Marin Mazzie as Clara.
Passion marks the third collaboration for Lapine and Sondheim, who won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for
Into the Woods. The impetus for the show came from Sondheim, who was taken quite literally with the 1981 movie
Passione d’Amore, director Ettore Scola’s adaptation of Tarchetti’s novel.
Lapine is not as big of a fan of the movie as Sondheim, and it was only after he read Tarchetti’s book that he became excited about the material: “When we started talking about the project, I said I’d like to do it as an opera. NEW YORK Twenty-time Grammy winner Al Schmitt, whose extraordinary career as a recording engineer and producer included albums by Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and many other of the top performers of the past 60 years, has died at age 91.
Schmitt’s family announced on Facebook that he died Monday, without identifying a specific cause. Schmitt lived in the Los Angeles area. A relative, who did not want to be identified, confirmed Schmitt’s death to The Associated Press. ....
