The quintessentially Californian artist Ed Moses deemed himself “a mutator.” The moniker was intended to describe his ever-evolving style, but it also captures something of the semi-psychedelic spirit Moses brought to his energetic, boldly colorful paintings for decades, until his death in 2018.
Moses was born in Long Beach, California, in 1926, and studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, before emerging as one of the most influential artists in the postwar West Coast art scene, which winked at its New York counterpart with a rascally sense of wit and fun. ....

Biography
Ed Moses is an American painter and central figure in the Los Angeles art scene and a key promoter of Post-War, West Coast art. Best known for his eclectic range of abstract paintings, Moses’ work is unified by his interest in transitory processes and the mutability of concepts. His work constantly shifted throughout his career, building off of the theories formulated by the pieces made before. His canvases are formal abstractions using a variety of processes to experiment with surface, creating striations, cracks, marks, and blurs that sometimes juxtaposed with hard-edge geometric abstraction. A contemporary of fellow West Coast compatriots like Wallace Berman, Billy Al Bengston, and Ed Ruscha, Moses was born in Long Beach, CA on April 9, 1926. He went on to study at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he would receive both his BA and MA, and exhibit at the notorious Ferus gallery in 1958. He was the subject of a major retrospective at the Museum of C ....

'Saving the best for last' | Arts & Entertainment

He’s been hailed as “one of the most productive and experimental artists of the last half-century,” but to the owner of the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art, Ed Moses was something more: He was a family friend.
Moses founded the Cool School, a group of seminal Los Angeles creatives, many of whom were represented by the Southland’s Ferus Gallery in the 1950s and 1960s.
Other members of the Cool School included Ed Ruscha, Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, Edward Kiehholz, John Altoon, Ken Price and Billy Al Bengston.
“Their raucous partying and creative camaraderie not only fused a nascent local scene but made the art world beyond take notice,” the LA Times said in a valedictory to Moses, who passed away in January 2018. ....
