Calgary family speaks out against Indigenous racism, neglect and discrimination in healthcare system

CALGARY
A Calgary family is searching for answers and seeking an apology from healthcare workers after they say their son was judged for his Indigenous ethnicity while seeking treatment in hospital.
“They told him you re just another drunken native who s abusing the system just to get opiates,” said Richard Cushman, who believes his son Nathan was discriminated against in a city hospital for the colour of his skin.
There is no audio or video recording of the allegations and CTV has not been able to independently confirm them, but they are disturbing.
“That is totally not my son,” Richard said. “He will go through more pain than anybody I know without taking any medication because he does not like doing drugs and it s just stereotyping. It s just judging when you shouldn t be judged.” ....

Retired RCMP inspector Stephen Gloade stands in front of the force s Heritage Centre in Regina, Sask. As a Mi kmaw from Millbrook First Nation in Nova Scotia, he is one of a few Indigenous members who have made it to a commissioned rank in the force.
When Carolyn Wagner joined the Mounties in 1986, the iconic bright-red serge and hat symbolized a path out of an unsatisfactory career with the Canadian military not the dark history many Indigenous communities have associated with the RCMP.
The role the Mounties played in Canada s residential schooling system, for example, is not what we were taught in depot, Wagner said, referring to her training years. Rather, the RCMP presented itself as saviours of the Indigenous people. ....

The Real-Life Stories Of Native American Warrior Women

Native American means
many things. There were an extraordinary number of cultures present within the Americas before European contact. And, unfortunately, there are very few historical records remaining today. Before the first European contact of 1492, there were approximately 60 million people living in the Americas. Today, sources such as the
Daily Herald tell us that there are 562 Native American tribes within the United States alone. It remains a mystery what happened to these cultures between 1492 and now, for a variety of reasons.
First, because histories were transferred orally, they were particularly disruptive to change. Initiatives such as the Trail of Tears led to widespread upheaval of Native American culture. Displaced Native Americans often had their cultures (and histories) erased and eradicated, and records by outsiders lumped them in together ....
