SAN DIEGO (KGTV) The San Diego Blood Bank, the primary supplier of blood to the majority of hospitals in San Diego County, teamed up with the San Diego Gulls and San Diego Honda dealers for the first blood drive of 2021.
The drive was held at the Dana Hotel on Mission Bay, and the group collected 73 pints of blood for area hospital patients.
Donors received free snacks, a Gulls Gift Pack, and a limited-edition San Diego Blood Bank T-shirt.
The San Diego Gulls have hosted drives with the San Diego Blood Bank for the last four years, and over that time have collected 327 pints. Since each pint can potentially save up to three lives, the Gulls have potentially saved up to 981 lives. ....

Rampant use of convalescent plasma behind Covid mutation?

NEW DELHI: A latest study in the US, the UK and Italy has shown that convalescent plasma used indiscriminately for Covid as it has been in India might alter the virus allowing escape mutations to dominate. An escape mutation allows SARS-COV-2 to evade antibodies specific to the spike protein which the virus uses to enter human cells.
Incidentally, ICMR director general Balaram Bhargava had warned against the random usage of unproven therapy such as convalescent plasma for Covid, saying that such practices put immune pressure on virus to mutate. To investigate the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in the immune population, scientists co-incubated authentic virus with a highly neutralising plasma from a Covid convalescent patient. ....

South Korea's 'Artificial Sun' Just Set a New World Record For High-Temperature Plasma

Scientists have just set a new world record for high-temperature sustained plasma with the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device, reaching an ion temperature of above 100 million degrees Celsius (180 million degrees Fahrenheit) for a period of 20 seconds.

Known as Korea s artificial sun , the KSTAR uses magnetic fields to generate and stabilise ultra-hot plasma, with the ultimate aim of making nuclear fusion power a reality – a potentially unlimited source of clean energy that could transform the way we power our lives, if we can get it to work as intended.
Before this point, 100 million degrees hadn t been breached for more than 10 seconds, so it s a substantial improvement on previous efforts – even if there s still a long way to go before we can completely ditch other sources of energy.
