BUFFALO, N.Y. — Add another one to the growing list of what we can start calling "beers for a cause." This time it is a collaboration of two breweries with Western New York ties.
It is a cause close to the hearts of both companies. In fact, Sullivan's U.S. CEO, Michael Meade, is a Buffalonian and a player in this year's 11 Day Power Play. "I happen to be somebody that runs a brewery and company out of Ireland and then here I am in Buffalo, New York at Thin Man Brewing Company doing a collaborative brew all to benefit the cancer causes that we're benefiting by skating in the 11 Day Power Play, so I'm so thrilled," Meade told Daybreak's Pete Gallivan.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The 2021 Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo will once again be a virtual festival taking place June 19-20.  Festival organizers are planning for the two-day virtual event to be viewed on several media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, Zoom and www.JuneteenthofBuffalo.com.
Adding to the excitement of this year's festivities is the recognition by New York State of Juneteenth, June 19, as an official public holiday.
Juneteenth was originally celebrated June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas learned that they'd been free, since the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, 2 1/2 years earlier.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — For many years, there has been endless discussion of development on Buffalo's outer harbor, but nearly a century ago one of our nation's foremost innovators and industrialists saw its potential.
Henry Ford had a long relationship with Buffalo. In 1913, he began assembling cars on Kensington Avenue. 3 years later, he built a new factory in what is now the Tri-Main Building.
But his connections were also somewhat personal at times. He visited the Chautauqua Institution on a number of occasions with Thomas Edison, who was married to the institution founder's daughter, Mina Miller. Jim Sandoro, founder of the Buffalo Transportation Pierce Arrow Museum says Ford even made his first sale here, even before the Ford Motor Company was a thing.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — When we think of M&T Bank, it's spectacular One M&T Plaza may come to mind says Cynthia Van Ness of the Buffalo History Museum. "It's one of the modernist masterpieces by (architect) Minoru Yamasaki from 1966 or thereabouts. It is one of his masterpieces and one of our modernist masterpieces too."
But Van Ness adds that it isn't the first architectural masterpiece the banking giant called home. "They wanted to send a message that we're trustworthy, we're solid, we're safe and protected and it were part of a long tradition, and that's why they often used various motifs in their building designs."

The lighthouse that reshaped a nation

The Unknown Story of the Horseshoe Reef Lighthouse

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo's waterfront has been the centerpiece of our redevelopment and resurgence as a city, but more than a century ago, a lighthouse actually reshaped our country. International boundaries were actually redrawn for what is now a crumbling structure that you probably have seen, and never given a second thought
It was around the time of the birth of Buffalo says Buffalo Lighthouse Association President Mike Vogel. "If you think about the harbor back in 1856 there was no break water separating the Black Rock Channel from the river itself ". Buffalo already had a light marking it's harbor, but the booming lumber and milling industry upriver made navigating the tricky maze of shoals at the mouth of the Niagara a priority. And so in 1849 congress approved funding for another lighthouse, with a particular emphasis on being sturdy enough to stand up to the ice flows and current. "It is only about 30 years after the opening of the Erie Canal in this harbor was really bustling" says Vogel.
