Falmouth Select Board Praises New Senior Housing Project Plans

Members of the Falmouth Select Board on Monday, May 10, lauded the nonprofit Falmouth Housing Corporation’s latest project for providing much-needed affordable rental apartments to lower income residents.
“It’s a pretty exciting project,” Falmouth Assistant Town Manager Peter Johnson-Staub said. “It is aimed at helping some of the most vulnerable members of our community.”
As proposed, the project is for 48 rental units for people 62 and older at 763 Main Street and 24 Scranton Avenue. The latter is currently vacant and the Main Street parcel is where a now-shuttered Cape Cod 5 branch is located. That building would be torn down to make way for the new development. ....

The COVID pandemic has in many ways changed not only how people live and work, but where. And officials on Cape Cod are trying to get a handle on just how many people migrated to the popular summer destination over the past year whether for the short-term or to stick around longer.
“I’ve noticed there were a lot more people around last fall than is normal,” Peter Johnson-Staub, Falmouth’s assistant town manager told MassLive. “There’s been a huge spike in the price of real estate, a huge spike in building activity, which we’re sort of thinking is partly related to people moving here.” ....

Falmouth Considering Hiring More Firefighters

While the town continues to discuss whether to provide fire and rescue services from five or six stations, it wants to hire more firefighters to keep the current stations open and operational, even after the Sandwich Road station is built.
Falmouth Select Board, at its meeting on Monday, May 10, directed Town Manager Julian M. Suso to develop a staffing model and bring it back to the board that would keep all stations open, including the West Falmouth location. Since last July, the station has only been staffed when firefighters volunteer for overtime to man it.
“I suggest starting now to build that financial package to hire more to keep West Falmouth open even after the new Sandwich Road station is open,” select board member Douglas H. Jones said. ....

Falmouth's Virtual Town Meeting Passes Budget, Funds New Fire Station Design

After four hours of discussion and debate, Falmouth Town Meeting passed the 2022 operating budget and disposed of other financial warrant articles at virtual Town Meeting on Monday, April 12.
A few technical glitches did not stop the 204 members from questioning two of the more controversial warrant articles to pay for Falmouth Fire and Rescue Department overtime and to fund the design of a new fire station. In the end, the body approved both items and the $142,647,656 budget as it was proposed.
The online meeting was met with some technical challenges as members were unable to be heard. Many were asked to call in their questions and Assistant Town Manager Peter Johnson-Staub would read them aloud. The sound did improve after the first half-hour, when Town Meeting members and the public could hear Moderator David T. Vieira s computer fan whirring. The IT department placed a desk fan near the computer to cool down his laptop.  ....

June town meeting at Falmouth High School for debate, vote 24 articles

Indigenous Peoples’ Day
The remaining 24 articles will be voted on and debated June 28. Those include petition articles related to plans to turn the golf course at Cape Cod Country Club into a solar overlay district and a petition article to change “Christopher Columbus Day” to “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.”
Some of the 24 articles slated for the June session could be approved ahead of schedule through a blanket vote on April 12, if members opt not to hold them for discussion, Assistant Town Manager Peter Johnson Staub said in an email. Most of the petition articles, however, will not be considered for approval without debate so that there can be a full, in-person debate on June 28. ....
