Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division scientist Luis Valcourt-Colón is the program lead for the SeaPerch underwater robotics STEM program at Dahlgren. Valcourt-Colón is a recipient of the Distinguished Community Service Award for his volunteer service with the SeaPerch and SeaGlide programs and with the STEM community at NSWCDD. His citation reads in part, “With innovative ideas, he grew a small outreach program into one of the most effective Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programs at NSWCDD. His drive and enthusiasm continue to be critical in reaching students and developing the next generation of STEM leaders.” ....

The Cooper name has been one of an enduring legacy in Pulaski County — and Cornelia Dozier Cooper is as much a part of that as anyone else in her family.
Her husband, Richard Cooper, was a longtime businessman in the community. Her brother-in-law, John Sherman Cooper, was the accomplished U.S. Senator whose image stands on the town square.
But Cornelia Dozier Cooper has managed to leave her own mark as well, in a lasting and important way, as a philanthropist, ardent supporter of the arts, and tireless worker for the betterment of Pulaski County. ....

Annual MLK Day celebration goes virtual, but still focused on unity

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s messages of unity and equality remain true more than 50 years after his assassination, including in Kirksville.
The 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Virtual CommUnity Celebration is called “You Belong Here, All Are Welcome Here.” There is a theme for each year’s celebration and this year’s piggybacks off the YouBelongHereKV community group that started last year. That group started after hateful signs were found in Kirksville, and then raised money to buy diverse books for schools.
“This is such a time where unity is so important,” said Bertha Thomas, the leader of the Martin Luther King Jr. Citywide Committee. “The nation, the country and our community are so in need of thinking about positive things and feelings that this seems perfect to do.” ....

Family Solutions, a program of the South Carolina Office of Rural Health, is the name for an umbrella of services that include Healthy Start, an infant and maternal wellness program, and Nurse-Family Partnership, a home visitation program for first-time mothers.
An Orangeburg-based family wellness program will hold its 12th annual Infant Mortality Awareness and Scholarship Luncheon on Friday, Sept. 13.
Healthy Start, which Family Solutions administers along with the NFP, works to reduce infant mortality in Barnwell, Allendale, Bamberg, Hampton and Orangeburg counties. The NFP program serves Orangeburg County. ....
