Today, the European Commission published its first report on the Tobacco Products Directive, five years after it became applicable in 2016. Thanks to the Directive, the EU has witnessed steady decreases in smoking rates and tobacco use. However, more efforts are needed. The report points out two main areas where we need to see improvements: enforcement at national level and better consideration of new market developments, such as novel tobacco products.

Public Health: EU Tobacco Products Directive is delivering but stronger action is needed
The European Commission yesterday published its first report on the Tobacco Products Directive, five years after it became applicable in 2016. After more than a decade of consideration, the US Food and Drug Administration has taken the first steps toward banning menthol flavored cigarettes and flavored cigars from the market.
The move might not have happened were it not for a Citizen’s Petition filed more than seven years ago by the Public Health Law Center, spurred on by litigation filed last year against the FDA by the African American Tobacco Leadership Council, Action on Smoking and Health, and others. Were it not for this legal advocacy, Big Tobacco would have continued to target youths and the Black community 85 percent of Black smokers use menthol cigarettes.
