Advances in contraception are recognised as one of the great public health achievements of the twentieth century.[[1]] But despite its importance, there has been little research in New Zealand about contraceptive use. In 2019, the Ministry of Health published the first national report on contraceptive use since 1999.[[2]] The 2019 report was based on data collected through the 2014/2015 annual New Zealand Health Survey. That data provide a snapshot of contraceptive use at one point in time but no information about changes over time. The Health Quality & Safety Commission’s Atlas on Healthcare Variation recently reported data[[3]] on contraceptive provision in 2018/2019. For medication to be therapeutically effective, it is essential that patients adhere to them. Filling a prescription is the first critical step to establish medication adherence.[[1,2]] Research on medication adherence has primarily focused on secondary non-adherence, which occurs when patients don’t take their medicines as prescribed, don’t refill their prescriptions on time or stop taking their medicines.[[3]] However, rates of primary medication non-adherence, where a patient fails to have a prescription filled for newly prescribed medicines or a suitable alternative within a specified timeframe, are far less known.[[3,4]] Failing to get newly prescribed medications filled places a burden on patients, families and the broader healthcare system by increasing mortality/morbidity, hospitalisation rates and/or emergency department ....

Regular physical activity is critical for children and young people’s health and wellbeing; it contributes to the development of healthy cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems and the maintenance of a healthy body weight, and it is associated with positive psychological and cognitive benefits.1 In New Zealand, the Ministry of Health recommends that young people aged 5–17 years accumulate at least one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day,2 which is in line with international guidelines.1 As few of 7% of young New Zealanders are currently doing enough physical activity at a sufficient frequency to meet these recommendations,3 with nearly half failing to achieve a sufficient total volume of physical activity on a weekly basis.4 This suggests that urgent action is required. ....
