Saving a village from becoming a ghost town for $15,000

“There’s a number of BnBs there that have become established since the trail was established. A coffee cart, a café, a service station. They all rely on the Timber Trail traffic as well. So we are not talking about the [Timber Trail] businesses, we are talking about the trail as a tourist attraction,” she said.
“We have invested money in Hamilton Waikato Tourism, we need to invest money at the other end because our district goes down to the other end as well.
“So we are investing money there to attract people from the south.
“We are not talking about businesses we are talking about economic development for the future of our district. To give opportunity for people to engage in business or to be employed – so we don’t end up a little ghost town.

Aaron Gate and Olivia Ray claim victories in Manawatū's Gravel and Tar Classic

Aaron Gate finishes ahead of Luke Mudgway to win the 2021 Gravel and Tar Classic.
It may have been a far cry from the smooth surfaces of an Olympic track or a United States road, but Aaron Gate and Olivia Ray still reigned supreme at the Gravel and Tar Classic in Manawatū on Saturday.
The duo – both winners of November’s criterium national champs in Christchurch – added to their resumes in taking out the UCI 1.2 event from Feilding to Palmerston North which features five gravel sectors of about 40km and is considered the hardest single-day road race in Oceania.
In a star-studded 164km men’s race, it was Black Spoke Pro Cycling Academy rider Gate who outgunned team-mate Luke Mudgway in a two-man sprint to the finish.
