N.J. Republican chair touts his support of Trump as he enters race to take on Murphy

State Republican Chairman Doug Steinhardt on Friday formally announced he has entered the 2021 race for the party’s nomination for New Jersey governor, painting himself as a “true conservative” and staunch supporter of President Donald Trump.
Steinhardt, who earlier filed papers to seek the office, announced his candidacy with a blast at Gov. Phil Murphy, the Democrat he hopes to oust next November, while touting his support for gun owners’ rights and opposition to abortion.
“Phil Murphy promised us stronger and fairer, but instead gave us weaker and poorer. His billions in new debt, buckets of new taxes and far-left agenda are tearing our families apart and costing New Jerseyans their lives and livelihoods.” Steinhardt, a 52-year-old attorney from Warren County, said in a statement. ....

The 2020 general election held some good news for both parties, though more for Democrats than Republicans, and the results offer plenty of evidence each party will likely use as they look to redraw New Jersey’s dozen congressional district boundaries in time for the 2022 midterms.
Republicans lost the state but the nearly 18% increase in the number of votes won by Donald Trump is also shaping next year’s gubernatorial race. Moderate Republican Jon Bramnick, the minority leader in the state Assembly who represents parts of Union, Morris and Somerset counties, on Wednesday took himself out of consideration and went on to tell nj.com that he thought it might be tough to win a GOP primary as a moderate. He was a vocal critic of Trump. That leaves three pro-Trump Republicans in the likely field so far. ....
