NYC mayoral candidates should adjust strategies for

SHARE:
“Who are your top five?” With weeks until voting starts in New York City’s primary election, it’s a question every major endorsement should answer – and so should the candidates.
New York City is about to run the largest ranked-choice voting election in U.S. history, but you wouldn’t know it from the way the campaigns are playing out so far. With rare exceptions, advocacy organizations and candidates alike have been running as if the only thing that matters is a voter’s top choice. And that leaves a lot of political power untapped.
Voters adopted ranked-choice, also known as instant-runoff, voting in city primaries in 2019. It will be used citywide for the first time this June. (Early voting starts June 12 and primary day is June 22.) Rather than choosing one candidate, voters rank up to five candidates in order of preference. Once the ballots are tallied, the candidate with the fewest first-choice rankings is eliminated, and voters who picked that ....

Just 1% of marijuana dispensaries in the country are Black-owned, according to city Comptroller Scott Stringer who promised Tuesday to end the inequity in New York City if he’s elected mayor.
With recreational cannabis now legal for adults in New York, Stringer said he would provide city-funded grants to help pot entrepreneurs get licenses and set up a “shared manufacturing space,” among other steps. He also envisions job training programs, technical assistance and legal counseling from the city. ....

NYC GOP mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa pledges to 'refund the police'

The longtime radio host argues New York City did not experience crime issues under Republican leadership.
Republican New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa said Tuesday that he would seek to increase funding for the New York Police Department to crack down on surging crime if he is elected.
Sliwa detailed his platform during a campaign event outside the NYPD’s headquarters in Manhattan. The Guardian Angels founder said he would push for the NYPD’s staffing to return to 38,000 officers, up from its current level of roughly 35,000 officers.
We’re going to refund the police, Sliwa said at the event, according to the New York Post. Put that billion dollars back into the budget. ....

SEC backs Amazon proposal from New York State Common

SEC backs Amazon proposal from New York State Common
Bloomberg
The SEC has backed New York State Common Retirement Fund s bid to have Amazon.com conduct an independent racial-equity audit.
Officials at the Securities and Exchange Commission denied the online retailer s request to keep the proposal off the ballot at its annual meeting.
In December, New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, trustee of the $247.7 billion pension fund, announced the shareholder proposal that Amazon undergo an independent audit to assess the company s policies and practices on civil rights, equity, diversity and inclusion, and how those affect the company s business.
Amazon says it stands alongside those fighting systemic racism, yet we continue to see reports of workers facing racial discrimination, accusations of discriminatory wages, and the sale of products that promote hatred, Mr. DiNapoli said in a December statement. ....
