The 2021 Queens Power 100

Office of Congressman Gregory Meeks Rep. Gregory Meeks started off the year with a new role on the world stage. Just weeks before 2020 ended, he was elected to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee – the first Black man ever to hold the position. Since then, Meeks has opposed a constitutional referendum in Haiti, passed a resolution condemning China’s actions in Hong Kong and proposed strengthening economic ties between Africa and the U.S., all while managing local politics back in the world’s borough in his continued role as chair of the Queens County Democratic Party. 4. Public banking: How it could work in New York

By Susan Arbetter City of Albany PUBLISHED 5:59 PM ET May. 03, 2021 PUBLISHED 5:59 PM EDT May. 03, 2021 SHARE For decades, many banks in the U.S. denied mortgages to people of color based strictly on race or the neighborhood where they lived. The practice, which started in the 1930s, was called red-lining and it was backed by the U.S. government. It’s one of the reasons that black families lost out on the wealth accumulation that white families have leveraged for the past 90 years. Are NYC comptroller candidates really running for mayor?

SHARE: Let’s be honest – New York City comptroller isn’t everybody’s first choice. After Michelle Caruso-Cabrera’s high-profile yet unsuccessful challenge to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the 2020 Democratic congressional primary, her recent decision to run for comptroller looks like somebody seeking a consolation prize. Of course, she’s not alone. Zach Iscol was running for mayor for months before he decided to drop out and run for comptroller instead. But he’s just following the example of the current comptroller, Scott Stringer, who was well into a 2013 mayoral run before deciding he would run for comptroller instead. Now eight years later, Stringer is following the well-worn path of city comptrollers running for mayor. Of the past nine city comptrollers, only one of them (Elizabeth Holtzman, the lone woman to hold the office) did not subsequently run for mayor.
