ALBANY, N.Y. (WKBW) — The New York State Education Department (NYSED) announced Wednesday the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) denied New York’s waiver request to cancel state assessments.
Due to the denial, NYSED says the following will occur:
It will administer only Session 1 of the grades 3-8 assessments in Mathematics and ELA.
It will administer only the written test component of the Grades 4 and 8 Science Tests.
Regents Examinations required under ESSA (ELA, Algebra 1, Earth Science and Living Environment Exams) will be given during June 2021. ....

WASHINGTON - The Biden administration is giving states extra time to seek a waiver from annual standardized tests mandated by federal law as New York and Michigan announced they don t want to subject students to the exams this year during the covid-19 pandemic.
In light of the ongoing pandemic, we have determined that the Spring 2021 state assessments cannot be safely, equitably and fairly administered to students in schools across the state, New York Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. said in a statement announcing the state s intention to seek a waiver. ....

New York will ask the federal government to waive state reading and math tests for a second consecutive year due to the coronavirus pandemic, state education officials announced Monday.

The state education department is requesting to cancel the reading and math tests administered to third through eighth grade students in the spring. It is also seeking to limit the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test to those English learners who are attending school in person. A second waiver would give the state a pass on identifying new struggling schools this year as part of school accountability requirements. ....

New York education officials on Monday began the formalized process of seeking a waiver for forgoing state testing in schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
The State Education Department announced two federal waiver requests are now open for public comment through Feb. 5. The move comes as the pandemic has kept some students from in-classroom instruction and learning remotely, either by request of their guardians or due to spiking cases in New York. 
“Throughout the pandemic the Board’s priority has been the physical and mental health, safety, and well-being of the children and adults in our schools,” said Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W.
